Color & Contrast: Ensuring Scan Reliability in Branded Designs

Aesthetics shouldn't break functionality. For a QR code to be readable, it must respect the physics of light and sensors.

The Quiet Zone

The "Quiet Zone" is the mandatory white border (typically 4 modules wide) surrounding the QR code. Without this gap, the scanner cannot distinguish the code from the surrounding artwork or background noise.

Contrast Ratio Patterns

A scanner works by detecting the difference in reflectance between the dark and light modules.

  • The Rule: Dark modules must be placed on a light background.
  • The Trap: Inverting colors (white modules on a black background) often confuses older scanners and barcode readers.

Finder Patterns (The Three Squares)

The three large squares in the corners are used for orientation and position detection. These must remain high-contrast and unobstructed for the scanner to understand the "tilt" and "scale" of the code in 3D space.
