Version 1 to 40: Navigating the QR Matrix Scaling System

QR codes aren't a fixed size. They scale through 40 different "Versions," each adding more modules (the small black and white squares).

The Module Increment

  • Version 1: 21x21 modules. Stores up to 25 alphanumeric characters.
  • Version 40: 177x177 modules. Can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters.

Finding the Geometric Balance

As you increase the amount of data, the modules become smaller and more densely packed. This makes the code harder to scan from a distance or with a low-quality camera.

Design Recommendation

For maximum scan-ability on printed marketing materials, aim for Version 2 to 7. If you need to store more data, consider using a Dynamic QR Code which uses a short URL to point to a larger dataset on a server.
